Projects Profile
Project Title
Compact Multiband Antenna for Mobile Terminals
Partnership
Prof. Xiaodong Chen, Queen Mary, University of London
Prof. Jingshen Yu, Beijing University of Post & Telecommunication (BUPT)
Project Aim
This project aims to develop a novel compact multiband antenna prototype that can be used on mobile devices to receive radio waves at different frequency.
Inspiration for the projects
The trend in wireless communication to integrate different communication modules into the same device has created a need for multiband antennas as there is only very limited space inside a mobile device such as a mobile phone or GPS receiver.
Consequently, considerable research has been conducted at QMUL on the compact multiband antenna design, which has lead to an antenna that can operate in six wireless frequency bands, plus one GPS band, providing a continuous coverage for all the wireless communication frequency bands from 1.80 GHz up to 5.8 GHz.
Commercial Potential and Further Development
Overall, the market for mobile devices is continually growing and devices are getting thinner and smaller. The research at QMUL has already attract interests from leading mobile devices manufactures. The successful development of a laboratory prototype will surely lead to further commercial development.
