Projects Profile
Project Title
Quantitative medical imaging: technology transfer, market research and regulation
Partnership
Prof. Wen Wang from Queen Mary, University of London
Prof. Enming Song from Huazhong University of Science & Technology
Prof. Qian Wang from Southern Medical University
Project Aim
The objective of the project is to validate the route for product commercialization of quantitative medical imaging software developed under an existing collaboration between QMUL, HUST and SMU. The elements of the validation are: market research, clinical evaluation and product embodiment
Inspiration for the projects
Currently there is no software package to quantitatively assess medical imaging such as ultrasonic and X-ray. Diagnosis still relies on the interpretation of the imaging by the medical professionals. Such technology if available will improve the efficiency and accuracy of medical diagnostic applications, including liver diseases and breast tumours.
Commercial Potential and Further Development
The expected output of the project includes development of the product prototype and a mini clinical trial to test the prototype and an independent market research to assess the market needs and regulatory requirements for the technology concerned.
The development of the technology at the next stage, subject to further funding, would be to refine the prototype according to industry standard and complete the clinical trial, which will be carried out under relevant medical device regulatory requirement to maximise the value of the research.
The technology, if successfully developed, will aid the diagnoses of breast cancer and other tissue abnormality through quantitative image analysis without the need to upgrade to expensive new equipments, which will benefits patients both in the UK and China.
