Projects Profile
Project Title
E-learning Courses Covering Environmental Decision Making and Applications of GIS (Geographical information Systems)
Partnership
Dr. Craig Hutton from University of Southampton
Dr. Suxia Liu from Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resources Research (IGSNRR), Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing
Project Aim
The GeoData Institute at University of Southampton will develop the capacity to deliver training courses in water resource management and environmental decision-making in collaboration with, and based at, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing.
Inspiration for the projects
Environmental issues have become a key policy driver across the world as Government bodies seek to address global environmental challenges. Our Chinese partners at IGSNRR (Institute of Geographical Sciences and Natural Resource Research), CAS have identified a requirement to develop blended training courses involving an E-learning component and face to face teaching in the field of water resource management and environmental decision-making and analysis. Specifically they see a need within China for training that has specific reference to the challenges posed by climate change, land-use/cover change and managing resources for a sustainable environment..
Commercial Potential and Further Development
From the outset the partners will explore how the proposed courses can be commercially self-sustaining within both the large internal market of CAS and external associated relevant private and public sector organizations. The approach will emphasize the use of relevant IT tools such as GIS (in which the GeoData Institute has extensive experience), which provide a spatial context for the review and analysis of environmental data and information. Such an approach combined with an English language delivery provides a substantial potential for commercial development.
