Projects Profile
Project Title
Development of novel metal compounds for Alzheimer’s disease therapy
Partnership
Dr. Adina Michael-Titus, Queen Mary, University of London
Prof. Yan Zhang, Peking University,
Project Aim
The aim of this Partnership Grant application is to establish a collaboration platform with
Peking University, which is one of China’s leading research centres in the field, with complementary research capacities, to further develop this therapeutic strategy and lead it to commercialization. The direct outcome of this project will lead to a joint ICUK PoC application with Peking University.
Inspiration for the projects
Dr. Adina Michael-Titus and her colleagues at QMUL have developed a new class of metal binding compounds which has shown promising therapeutic properties against neurodegenerative diseases.
The research at QMUL has drawn considerable industry interests from multinational pharmaceutical companies but needs further development to realize the commercial potential. A full understanding of the in vivo and in vitro profile of our new MPACs is essential for rapid development and selection of the best compound for a clinical trial.
Peking University has considerable expertise especially in the in vitro cellular and molecular analysis of amyloid peptides. Through ideas exchange and discussions, the two sides would like to apply for the support of the ICUK PoC fund, for the next stage development.
Commercial Potential and Further Development
The direct output of this project will lead to a joint ICUK PoC application with Peking University. The technology has attracted so far significant interest from UK pharmaceutical companies; the potential ICUK PoC project will gather the in vitro and in vivo data necessary to reach commercial arrangements with major pharmaceutical companies.
