Projects Profile

Project Title

Establishment of a technical platform for development of new biomarkers and therapeutics for cancer treatment in China

Partnership

Prof. Nick Lemoine, Queen Mary, University of London

Prof. Ziming Dong, Zhengzhou University

Project Aim

The aim of the project is to support a Chinese scientist based at the Joint Research Centre at Zhengzhou University to work for 3 months, therefore to transfer the knowledge and expertise. This will be followed by visit by QM academics to ensure that the techniques are well established in the joint research centre.

Inspiration for the projects

Institute of Cancer Research at Queen Mary and Zhengzhou University established a strategically important joint research centre in 2006. The joint centre has already secured substantial financial support and is focusing its effort on translational research. The centre is currently developing novel cancer therapy and is hoping to move into pre-clinical trial in China. To speed up the development work, it is necessary to transfer the knowledge and expertise in some proprietary techniques developed at Queen Mary to the joint research centre based in Zhengzhou University. Prof. Nick Lemoine, director for Institute of Cancer Research therefore asked the support from ICUK.

Commercial Potential and Further Development

The 3 month stay and work in QM by the Chinese scientist will ensure the transfer the proprietary techniques to the joint research centre. This will also produce a handbook of laboratory techniques in adenoviral cancer therapy research, which can be used in the future to train other staff at Zhengzhou as well as satisfying certain SFDA requirement.

With the speeding up the development work at the joint Research Centre, it is anticipated that a follow-up PoC application may be submitted in 2009.
