The 1st China Jiangsu Conference for International Technology Transfer & Commercialisation (CITTC)
Date: 6th -7th November 2008
Venue: Nanjing
At the invitation of MoST to contribute to the 1st China Jiangsu Conference for International Technology Transfer & Commercialisation and also to showcase ICUK projects to business and industry representatives from China, ICUK organised a selection of 10 projects to present in this high profile conference hosted by Jiangsu Provincial government.
ICUK was represented at 5 out of 7 parallel sessions. Key academics of ICUK partner HE institutions from both the UK and China attended the conference and presented their projects along with ICUK project managers, all of which have been well received. The audience showed strong interest in the ICUK programme and additional people did arrive specifically to hear ICUK introduction and sessions. Some of ICUK projects also attracted very strong interest from industry. For example, the presentation by Dr Zhao of The University of Nottingham on "A Novel Dew Point Air Conditioner and its Application in China and UK Buildings" was overwhelmingly welcomed and many industrial delegates indicated their interest in collaboration on the project and their intention to take the technology into market.
The CITTC conference was extremely well attended by representatives from both Chinese and International companies across a wide range of sectors. which provided a good plaftorm for ICUK to share best practice and make useful contacts amongst representatives of different organisations.
ICUK IP Workshop in Nanjing
Date: 5th November 2008

To further facilitate the UK-China knowledge transfer collaboration, ICUK plans to organise a small-scale Intellectual Property (IP) workshop in Nanjing on 5th November for ICUK project managers and academics who will be in Nanjing to attend the 1st Jiangsu International Technology Transfer Conference. The IP workshop will invite IP specialists from both the UK and China to look at some key issues in Intellectual Property & technology collaboration in China, IP protection in international science and technology collaboration.

Commercialization of Photonics Technologies from Universities
Date: 30 October -2nd November 2008
Venue: Shanghai
Initiated by key academics from University of Southampton, ICUK will be running a workshop on Commercialization of Photonics Technologies from Universities at the Asia Optical Fiber Communication & Optoelectronic Exposition & Conference (AOE) in Shanghai, China. This event will be led by University of Southampton, one of ICUK 5 UK partner institutions and will
bring together the best minds from industry, government, university and capital communities to share their visions, business models and experiences of bringing the outcomes of their research into a business environment.
Speakers will cover a range of topics with direct relevance to commercialization. These will include building links between industry and the University sector, the incubation of newly formed companies and exploring funding sources. The keynote speaker will be Professor David Payne who will draw on his experience of establishing and running a successful photonics cluster of nine companies who have their origins in the Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC) at the University of Southampton. Richard Lin from Fangda Partners in Shanghai will provide a briefing on issues related to Intellectual Property Right protection for international joint R&D and technology transfer.

Building A UK-China Partnership In GNSS and Geospatial Sciences
Dates: 22-23 October 2008
Venue: Wuhan University
Initiated by key academics from The University of Nottingham, ICUK is planning a workshop on Building a UK-China Partnership in GNSS and Geospatial Sciences in Wuhan University in China. This event is going to be led by The University of Nottingham, one of the 5 ICUK UK partner institutions.
This event aims to
- Set up a common platform for UK-China professionals in GNSS and Geospatial Sciences to exchange information on a regular basis (a workshop once every two years), seek research collaboration opportunities, promote mutual technology transfer and personnel visit/training.
- Through open debate and discussion to establish mutual understanding about the opportunities and challenges that will be encountered by both sides with the launch of new satellite navigation systems and new signals, especially Compass and Galileo systems.
- Promote and exploit new applications of GNSS systems, especially in tackling global warming/climate changes and other critical engineering and environmental applications.
- Promote commercialization of the latest research work.

1. China-UK Forum in Biomedical Innovation

Iniatiated by Prof. Wen Wang from Queen Mary, University of London, China-UK Forum in Biomedical Innovation is 1st ICUK event in China.
This event aims to build a knowledge exchange platform to inspire joint innovation and to explore technology transfer opportunities in the field of Biomedical Sciences and Engineering.

2. ICUK Projects Promotion and Match-Making
Date: 20 March 2008

In an effort to
further enhance communication opportunities for the ICUK projects, ICUK Projects Promotion and Match-Making event will be hosted by teh Department of International Cooperation of Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology in Suzhou in March.
This event aims to build a platform for the UK and Chinese academics and potential business partners to exchange ideas, explore commercialisation potentials. According to MoST, this event will be joined by up to 50 Chinese enterprises with the UK and Chinese academics representatives.
